Botanical name - Ocymum Basilicum

Extraction - Oil is extracted from the flowering plant.

Herbal Tradition - For centuries considered an aphrodisiac, Basil was also thought to ward off evil spirits - a more modern use in some Mediterranean climates is to carry a few sprigs to repel insects.

Properties - A refreshing, light and uplifting oil with a spicy, camphor-like smell.

Recommended usage - Bath, Massage, Oil Burner, Inhalation

Good to blend with - Lavender, Geranium, Bergamot

Bergamot Pure Essential Oil Ref: berga

Botanical name - Citrus Bergamia

Extraction - Oil is extracted from the peel of the nearly ripe, bitter orange-like fruit.

Herbal Tradition - Bergamot was used from the sixteenth century onwards to lower fevers.

Properties - Refreshing, uplifting, de-stressing and antiseptic, also a good room deodoriser. Bergamot has a warm spicy smell with balsamic undertones.

Recommended usage - Bath, massage, inhalation. Directly on a tissue for acute relief from emotional upset or negative moods.

Good to blend with - Cypress, Neroli, Jasmine

Warnings - Bergamot is a potent essential oil that can itrritate sensitive skin, especially if skin is subsequently exposed to sunlight. All citrus based essential oils should be stored in a cool dry place.

Cedarwood Pure Essential Oil Ref: cedar

Botanical name - Cedrus Atlantica

Extraction - Cedarwood oil is extracted from the wood of the evergreen Cedarwood confierous tree found in the middle east and North Africa.

Herbal Tradition - Cedars are historically associated with longevity, and were often planted in graveyards. Their oil was used for embalming in ancient Egypt, and as incense.

Properties - Stimulating and refreshing. Cedarwood oil has a woody smell and an astringent effect.

Recommended usage - Bath, massage, oil burner. Cedarwood also makes a good scalp massage oil, and in an inhalation it makes a good steam facial.

Good to blend with - Sandalwood, Bergamot, Jasmine, Neroli

Warnings - Best avoided during pregnancy.

Chamomile (Roman)

Botanical Name - Anthemis Nobilis

Extraction - From the freshly dried flowers, which are found across eastern Europe and North America.

Herbal Tradition - One of the oldest medicinal and beauty herbs in Britain, Chamomile has been used to make soporific teas, and as a natural antiseptic.

Property - Healing, antiseptic, sedative. The oil has a pungent, staw like aroma.

Citronella Pure Essential Oil Ref: citro

Botanical Name - Cymbopogon Nardus

Extraction - From the dried grass that grows naturally near the sea, and is found in the Seychelles, Sri Lanka and Java.

Herbal Tradition - Citronella leaves have been used as a poultice (compressed pulp) for fever and pain relief. Also used traditionally for muscle pains and as an insect repellent.

Properties - Increases alertness, soothes aches and pains. This oil has a strong lemony aroma with an antiseptic tang.

Recommended usage - Bath, footbath, oil burner, inhalation. Also useful to repel insects on holiday - sprinkle on bedding at night. Also useful to stop the itching of insect bites.

Warnings - Ensure that Citronella is aslways diluted in oil or water before application. Best avoided during pregnancy.

Cinnamon Pure Essential Oil Ref: cinna

Botanical Name - Cinnamomum Zeylanicum

Extraction - From the leaves and twigs of the tropical Cinnamon tree, native to Indonesia but cultivated in India & Sri Lanka.

Herbal Tradition - Cinnamon has been traded as an important spice and medicinal commodity since antiquity, particularly between India, China and Egypt. "Cinnamon" is from the Greek word 'Kinnamon' meaning tube or pipe, and refers to the rolls of quill like bark. Cinnamon was widely used for temple incense, as a remedy for bilious attacks and in sedatives.

Properties - Warming and spicy aroma, with a stimulating, astringent quality.

Recommended usage - Cinnamon oil is good in an oil burner, especially to purify the air or to ease symptoms of cold and flus. Can be added to a blended massage oil or to the bath to give warming relief to rheumatic and arthritic pains.

Good to blend with - Clove, Frankincense, Ginger, Lavender and Thyme.

Warnings - Care should be taken with the use of Cinnamon when applied to the skin via massage or added to the bath as it is a potent oil which can irritate the skin and mucus membranes. The use of Cinnamon Oil should be avoided during pregnancy.

Clary Sage Pure Essential Oil Ref: clary

Botanical Name - Caliva Sclarea

Extraction - Via steam distillation of the leaves and the flowering tops of the plant.

Herbal Tradition - Traditionally one of the most useful herbs, being used for digestive disorders and most nervous complaints. It also made a soothing eye lotion, hence the name "Clary" (Clear eye).

Properties - Clary sage is mildly antiseptic, but its main actions are warming, uplifting and relaxing. In aromatherapy Clary sage is used to treat PMT, associated backache & cramps, and for fatigue, stress and persistent headaches.

Recommended usage - Massage, scalp massage bath.

Good to blend with - Lavender, Sandalwood, Geranium, Cypress

Warnings - Safe for home use if diluted before application. However best avoided during pregnancy.

Clove Leaf Pure Essential Oil Ref: clove

Botanical Name - Eugenia Caryophyllum

Extraction - From the leaves of the Clove bush, native to Indonesia and Madagascar.

Herbal Tradition - "Clove" refers to the bud, and is derived from the Latin word "Clavus", meaning nail shaped. Clove has been used since antiquity by the Greeks, Romans and in China as a painkiller for toothache and as a breath sweetener.

Clove's natural antiseptic properties were also thought to purify and protect from infectious disease. The Tudors studded oranges with clove buds and kept them in their pockets or underclothes as a natural deoderant.


Properties - Hot, spicy and penetrating aroma, with a stimulating and uplifting quality. It is said to strengthen the mind, especially the memory and concentration.

Recommended usage - Good in an oil burner or to fragrance Pot Pouri, Clove Oil is also a useful insect and moth repellant - sprinkle a few drops of a cotton wool ball and place in wardrobes to deter moths.

Good to blend with - Basil, Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Lavender, Orange and Sandalwood.


Warnings - The use of Clove Oil should be avoided during pregnancy. Clove Oil is a skin irritant, and is not recommended for use in the bath, for massage, or directly on the skin.

Cypress Pure Essential Oil Ref: cypre

Botanical Name - Cupressus Sempervirens

Extraction - From freshly picked leaves twigs and cones of this evergeen tree. Native to the Mediterranean.

Herbal Tradition - Cypress trees were prized by the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, and used to slow down internal bleeding and to boost the circulation.

Properties - Invigorating, refreshing, antiseptic, improves blood circulation.Cypress oil has a warm woody smell with balsamic undertones, with an astringent effect.

Eucalyptus Pure Essential Oil Ref: eucal

Botanical Name - Eucalyptus Globulus

Extraction - From the twigs and leaves of the Blue Gum tree, originally native to Australia.

Herbal Tradition - Eucalyptuse leaves were crushed and used by Aborigines to heal wounds and fight infections, and to relive aches and pains.

Properties - Antiseptic, stimulating, cooling on the skin.
Eucalyptus has a distinctive stimulating aroma, and is also a powerful antiseptic, so useful for fevers, where its skin cooling properties are also beneficial. It is also a powerful decongestant and aids breathing and chest complaints.

Botanical name - Boswellia Carteri

Extraction - From the gum resin of the Frankincense tree, which is native to Africa (Somalia) and the Middle East.

Herbal Tradition - One of the most highly prized luxury commodities in ancient times, Frankincesne was used as an offering to the god. It was also widely used as a general pick me up for many disorders.

Geranium Pure Essential Oil Ref: geran

Botanical Name - Pelargoinum odorantissimum

Extraction - From the fresh flowers, stalks and leaves of this perennial flowering shrub.

Herbal Tradition - Geranium oil was a fairly recent discovery in the 1850's, although its flowers have been cultivated for their sweet aromas for centuries.

Properties - Geranium is an excellent skin soother - it is also soothing, calming and balancing, with a rose like sweet aroma with lemon and mint undertones.

Recommended usage - Massage, bath, oil burner, inhalation - geranium is one of the most important oils in aromatherapy as a general mood raiser and tonic, and to promote relaxation. Ginger Pure Essential Oil Ref: ginge

Botanical Name - Zingber Officinalis

Extraction - From the dried root of the tropical herbacious ginger plant, typically grown in the West Indies, Africa and Asia.

Herbal Tradition - Ginger has a long tradition of use in the kitchen as well as medicinally by the ancient Egyptians, and in the far east for stomach complaints and to reduce fever.

Properties - Ginger is stimulating, warming and astringent, with a pungent peppery aroma with undertones of lemon. Ginger is used in Aromatherapy to relieve chesty coughs, stomach aches and to increase the circulation. Ginger's astringent and antiseptic properties make it perfect to soak and freshen up tired feet.

Jasmine (Dilute) Essential Oil Ref: jasmi

Botanical name - Jasminium Officinale

Extraction - A kilogramme of Jasmine oil is extracted from approximately eight million white Jasmine flowers; for this reason Jasmine absolute oil is very expensive.

Herbal Tradition - Jasmine has long been prized for its rich, exotic scent and its uplifting effect on the senses.

Properties - Jasmine oil is red, unlike its white flower. It is used in Aromtherapy to lift depression, stress, fatigue and apathy. It is also used to address PMT symptons and is a good skin softener.

Recommended usage - massage, bath, inhalation, poultice and cold compress. Jasmine mixes well with other oils and is very good to add to a relaxing bath or massage.

A few drops of Jasmine added to a saucer of water placed in a room will help everyone in the room feel more relaxed.

Lavender Pure Essential Oil Ref: laven
Botanical name - Lavandula Angustifolia

Extraction - From the flowering tips of the evergreen Lavender shrub.

Herbal Tradition - Lavender has a long tradition in Aromatherapy. Used by the ancient Romans and extensively since the 18th century.

Properties - Widely used in Aromatherapy to ease tension, invigorate after tiredness and to dispel feelings of depression. When used for massage, lavender produces a relaxing, calming effect. Lavender's gentle yet powerful healing properties also make it ideal to treat minor burns and insect bites. Lavender is gentle enough to apply undiluted to the skin.

Recommended usage - massage, bath, inhalation, poultice and cold compress. Lemon Pure Essential Oil Ref: lemon
Botanical name - Citrus Limon

Extraction - Lemon oil is extracted from the fresh rind of the citrus fruit which grows throughout the Mediterranean region.

Marjoram Pure Essential Oil Ref: marjo
Botanical Name - Origanum Majorana

Extraction - From the dried flowering heads of the shrub.

Herbal Tradition - Marjoram was revered as sacred in India and Egypt, and by the Greeks as a symbol of love. It has been widely used from ancient times onwards as a remedy for digestive, nervous and respiratory complaints.

May Chang Pure Essential Oil  Ref: maych

Botanical Name - Litsea Cubeba

Extraction - Steam distilled from the May Chang tree, a small tropical tree native to China, with lemon-scented leaves and small fruits resembling peppers.


Herbal Tradition - May Chang was used in traditional Chinese medicine as a bronchodilator, and was inhaled to ease the symptoms of asthma and bronchitis. Its antiseptic properties were also employed to freshen and deoderise sick rooms.

Properties - A sweet, lemony- citrus aroma with fruity and floral undertones. Stimulating and uplighting, energizing, May Chang is also a natural antiseptic and bacteriacide.

Recommended usage - May Chang is used in massage and Aromatherapy to treat fatigue, lethargy, insomnia, anxiety and depression. Add to a bath or shower for an uplifting, toning boost. Its astringent properties make it particularly suitable for oily skin. Add to an oil burner to deoderise a room and to lift mood.

Botanical name - Citrus aurantium

Extraction Method: By steam distillation of freshly picked flowers from the evergreen Neroli tree.

Orange Pure Essential Oil Ref: orang

Botanical name - Citrus Sinensis

Extraction - Orange oil is extracted from the fresh peel of the Sweet Orange tree which grows throughout the Mediterranean region and the Americas.

Herbal Tradition - Orange has been used since Roman times to settle stomach complaints and hangovers, and is used today to boost the immune system, fight colds, and as an insect repellant in cleaning and polishing preparations.

Properties - Orange oil is approximately 90% Limonene, accounting for its fresh citrus aroma, which refreshes and stimulates as well as being an insect repellant. Extraction - From the dried leaves and shoots of the herb.

Botanical Name: Citrus Aurantium Amara

Extraction - From the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree.

Herbal Tradition - Used as an additive in perfumes and eau de cologne for hundreds of years for its stimulating and antiseptic/deodorising qualities.

Properties - The strong citrus tang of Petitgrain betrays its relation to both Neroli and Orange essential oil. Petitgrain is recommended to help relieve tiredness and stress related symptoms.

Herbal Tradition - Herbalists across the ancient world used Peppermint for stomach ailments and digestion, or as a drink for nervous complaints.

Properties - Peppermint contains menthol, hence its energising, cooling and head clearing properties. In aromatherapy it is good for headaches, fatigue, varicose veins, nausea and indigestion, and PMT.

Recommended usage - Massage, bath, inhalation, footbath, compress. Add a few drops to a tissue to clear a stuffy head or relieve a headache, nausea or travelsickness. Add a few drops to a footbath to invigorate hot, tired feet.
Use peppermint in moderation in massage and in the bath.

Good to blend with: Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Lemon, Marjoram, and Lavender.

Pine Pure Essential Oil Ref: pinee
Botanical Name: Pinus Sylvestrus

Extraction - From the needles, cones and twigs of the Pine tree.

Herbal Tradition - Pine has been used since classical times to ease respiratory complaints and muscle pain. Pine needles were burnt to clear the air and to repel insects.

Properties - Pine essential oil has a very strong, balsamic like aroma, similar to the smell of crushed pine needles - it is both stimulating and antiseptic. In Aromatherapy pine is used for viral infections such as coughs and colds, and for muscular aches and rheumatism.

Extraction - From the freshly picked petals of the Rose blossom.

Herbal Tradition - Rose has been honoured since antiquity as a symbol of love and for its heady, sweet fragrance. Rosewater was used by the Romans as an aphrodisiac and to banish hangovers on the morning after!

Properties - Rose oil has the same smell and instantly uplifting and positive effect as the Rose flower. In aromatherapy Rose oil is used to alleviate stress, depression, headaches or insomnia. Rose is also good for the skin, expecially for dry and broken skin, thread veins and wrinkles.

Extraction - From the leaves and twigs of the tea Tree shrub, which is native to Australia.

Herbal Tradition - Tea Tree's powerful antiseptic, antiviral and germicidal properties were first discovered by the Aborigines, and later taken up by doctors during the second world war.

Thyme Pure Essential Oil Ref: thyme
Botanical Name - Thymus Vulgaris (White Thyme)

Extraction - From the fresh or dried leaves and tops of the herb.

Herbal Tradition - Used since ancient times for embalming, and as a medicinal standby for most ailments.
